Permafrost can be played solo, but it is also built for online co-op of up to four players total. If you want to survive the frozen apocalypse with friends, here is how it works and how to get the most out of it.

Player count and setup

Co-op supports one to four players in the same world. Solo play is a fully supported way to experience the game, so co-op is an option rather than a requirement. Specific session and hosting details will be clearest at launch, so treat the finer points as expected for now.

Shared survival, divided work

The developers are deliberate about what co-op is for. It does not make enemies weaker or the cold gentler. Instead, it lets your group divide the responsibilities of survival: one player scavenges while another tends the fire, crafts or fortifies, and you play to each other’s strengths.

That makes coordination the real multiplayer skill. Four survivors all doing the same thing waste the advantage. Assign roles, share supplies, and a group can build shelter networks and cover ground far faster than a lone survivor.

The trade-off

More survivors means more people to keep warm and fed, and more coordination to get everyone through a storm alive. The world stays exactly as harsh as it is solo. Co-op rewards groups that communicate, not groups that simply outnumber the cold.

Solo is still complete

If you prefer the lonelier, more deliberate experience, solo play stands on its own, and your dog companion means you are never entirely alone out there. Whether you bring friends or go it alone, the core of Permafrost stays the same: stay warm, stay alive.

Frequently asked questions

How many players is Permafrost co-op?

Permafrost supports up to four players total in online co-op, and it can also be played entirely solo.

Does co-op make Permafrost easier?

Not directly. The developers have said co-op does not simplify the world, it just means you do not face the cold alone. The benefit is dividing the work of survival, not reducing the danger.
